Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 1-seed Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer earned its ninth shutout of the season in a 3-0 defeat of No. 8-seed Marian (Ind.) in the Crossroads league Tournament First Round match at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan advances to the Crossroads League Tournament Semifinals next Saturday and will host No. 4-seed Bethel (Ind.). Bethel defeated No. 5-seed Goshen (Ind.) 3-1 earlier today to move into the semifinal round. Indiana Wesleyan defeated Bethel 2-1 in the regular season on October 12 in Mishawaka.
Tyrone Martin scored quickly to put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead 1-0 in just the sixth minute of play. The rest of the first half was played pretty evenly as Indiana Wesleyan held a slim 6-5 shot advantage with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The top-seed Wildcats would turn it up a notch in the second half and created some distance from the Knights.
In the 56th minute, Geoff Bowman created a highlight reel goal to put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 2-0. Martin got the ball over to Bowman who then flicked the ball to himself before slamming it into the net for the insurance goal.
Marian committed a foul with a hand ball in the box in the game’s 69th minute to set up a penalty kick situation. Corey Lopez took the free kick and scored for a 3-0 cushion.
The Wildcats controlled the second half with an 11-2 shot advantage for a 17-7 margin on the night. Josh Goepper earned the shutout in net for the Wildcats as he made three saves for the win.
