LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s cross country team ran on the course that the NAIA National Championship meet will be held in November. IWU hopes it is the first of two races in Lawrence, Kansas as they competed in the NAIA National Preview Meet today.
Indiana Wesleyan tallied 289 points today to finish 12th of 30 teams. IWU is ranked No. 25 in the NAIA Top-25 Poll and was one of 10 teams ranked in the national poll to compete in Kansas.
No. 9-ranked Dordt (Iowa) won the invitational with 99 points while No. 14 Taylor (Ind.) was second with 107 points. No. 15 Oklahoma Baptist earned third place, No. 10 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) was fourth, No. 24 Shawnee State (Ohio) earned fifth, No. 18 Doane (Neb.) placed sixth, No. 20 Aquinas (Mich.) was seventh, No. 16 Cornerstone (Mich.) finished eighth, and No. 22 Indiana Tech was ninth.
Christina Sandberg was the top runner for the Wildcats today with a time of 19:30. Her time was good for 47th place in the 268 runner field.
Brooke Horswell and Isabel Wharton each raced to a time of 19:42 for 61st and 62nd positions, respectively. Kayla Ewert crossed the line in 65th place in a time 19:46 and Laura Nordquist was the final scorer in 69th position at 19:59.
Julie Kamp and Alyssa Foss rounded out the team in 70th and 71st place. Kamp ran a 19:51 while Foss was two seconds behind at 19:53. All seven Wildcats finished with 23 seconds of each other and the second through seventh runners were all with 11 seconds.
Indiana Wesleyan will take a week off before returning to action on October 26 at the Great Lakes Invitational in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
