Box Score MARION, Ind. (Photos) -- In one of the most inexplicable evenings at Wildcat Field the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team finished in a 1-1 tie with Grace (Ind.) College.
The main culprit for the strange night was the fog that rolled in after the match had started. A patch of fog rolled in for about 10 minutes during the first half but by halftime the fog had entrenched itself across the entire pitch.
Fog made the field difficult to see and the head official brought the game to a delay with 23:03 remaining in the second half with the match at a 0-0 standstill. The fog delay lasted nearly an hour before play was resumed.
Less than four minutes after the restart, Indiana Wesleyan struck for the contest's first score. Geoff Bowman played a ball in from the foggy corner to Micah Snyder who beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute.
But the lead would not last long. Just 59 seconds later Shane Barthuly collected the ball on a broken play and beat Indiana Wesleyan keeper Josh Goepper for the 1-1 tie.
The Wildcats continued to press the Lancers and created three scoring opportunities. But all three shots the Wildcats took would not be on target as the Lancers attempted to weather the storm.
Then on the final scoring opportunity for Indiana Wesleyan is when a strange night got even odder. Indiana Wesleyan was pressing the ball forward and a Grace foul occurred about 25-yards from the net with 1:07 left in the second half. The official called for a yellow card on the Grace defender and then brought a close to the match, citing unsafe playing conditions.
The stoppage of the match left everyone stunned as the match finished in a 1-1 tie.
Indiana Wesleyan is 6-1-3 after the match and 1-0-1 in Crossroads League play. Grace is 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play. IWU returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday with a road contest at Huntington (Ind.) University.
