Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team defeated visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University 2-1 with an early goal and a late goal on Tuesday night at Wildcat Field.
Freshman midfielder Keaton Albert scored his sixth goal of the season in the game's fifth minute. Then, freshman forward Corey Lopez found the back of the net with the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of play. The goal for Lopez was his fifth of the season.
The late Lopez goal seemed to finish off Mount Vernon Nazarene as Indiana Wesleyan led 2-0 and just eight minutes remaining. But Kwaku Frimpong cut the lead in half with a goal for Mount Vernon Nazarene with 3:41 remaining.
The Cougars continued to pressure the Wildcat defense as they attempted to send the match into overtime. MVNU put two shots on goal, including one with less than 15 seconds remaining, but Wildcat freshman keeper Josh Goepper made the save on both opportunities. Goepper collected seven saves in all Tuesday night.
Both teams fired off 15 shots as Indiana Wesleyan held an 11-8 advantage on shots that were on target.
Indiana Wesleyan has not lost in its last 10 matches and improves to 8-1-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the Crossroads League. Mount Vernon Nazarene drops to 7-4-2 and 2-1-1 in league play.
