Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- No. 3-ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) answered a match-tying goal late in the first half to overcome Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer 3-1 on Friday night at the Dave Jones Memorial Classic in Cedarville, Ohio.
Junior midfielder Josh McKinley scored in the 35th minute for the Wildcats to tie the score 1-1. But six minutes later the Redmen took the momentum with an unassisted goal for the 2-1 lead just before halftime that they would not surrender.
Rio Grande struck early with a goal in the third minute of play for the early 1-0 advantage. URG capped the evening with an insurance goal in the 79th minute for the 3-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Dylan McCauley started in net for Indiana Wesleyan and saved four of the seven shots he faced. Rio Grande totaled 14 shots in all as Indiana Wesleyan was able to put four of six shots on target. After Rio Grande peppered the IWU defense with 11 first half shots, the Wildcats limited URG to just three total shots in the final 45 minutes.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 2-3-0 on the season while Rio Grande improves to 5-0-0.
The Wildcats will finish the Dave Jones Memorial Classic at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 against host Cedarville (Ohio) University.
