Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer defeated Marian (Ind.) University 3-0 on Saturday night in the MCC Tournament semifinals at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats will now play at top-seeded Bethel (Ind.) College in the MCC Tournament championship next Saturday. The two teams will play for the conference title for the third straight season and IWU will play in its fourth consecutive MCC championship match.
To advance to its fourth straight title match, Indiana Wesleyan had to get passed Marian who had previously defeated IWU 2-1 in the regular season. But on Saturday Indiana Wesleyan dominated play although it went late into the second half to create some breathing room.
IWU found the back of the net for the first goal in the 14th minute. Senior midfielder Mitch Lobdell found junior midfielder Ross Tanzer for the eventual game-winner. The goal for Tanzer was his fifth of the season which temporarily tied him with senior forward Austin Bock for the team lead. Tanzer has now scored in each of the last four matches.
The score remained 1-0 at halftime with Indiana Wesleyan out-shooting Marian 6-3 and it was 4-1 in shots on goal.
Indiana Wesleyan peppered the Marian goal area in the second half with 12 more shots, five being on target. Bock seized the team lead in goals with his sixth of the season in the 70th minute from a David Enger assist. Less than three minutes later, Bock scored unassisted for this seventh goal of the year and a 3-0 Wildcat cushion.
Freshman goalkeeper Dylan McCauley stopped three shots for his fifth shutout of the season.
The Wildcats have now won five straight matches and nine of its last 11 to up their recrod to 11-8-1. Marian falls to 12-6-2.
Indiana Wesleyan, the conference tournament's No. 2-seed, will battle the top-seed Bethel next Saturday, November 13 in Mishawaka, Indiana. The winner of that match will earn the MCC's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship.
