Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- For the third time in three years Bethel (Ind.) College claimed the Mid-Central College Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship with a win over Indiana Wesleyan University.
The Pilots won Saturday night in Mishawaka, Indiana behind three goals in the final 20 minutes of play to pull out a 4-1 victory.
The Wildcats had tied the match 1-1 a few minutes earlier. Senior forward David Trainer collected a rebound shot for the equalizer in the 63rd minute of play before the late Bethel outburst.
Following Trainer's game-tying goal, Bethel flooded the Indiana Wesleyan defense and finished the second half with a 13-3 advantage in shots. Bethel scored the final three goals in the 71st, 83rd and 90th minutes to collect the MCC's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.
Bethel scored the first goal of the contest in the 14th minute and held a 1-0 lead until the middle of the second half when Trainer tied the score.
Bethel outshot Indiana Wesleyan 17-6 as IWU freshman goalkeeper collected four saves. Cody Troyer earned the win in net for Bethel with one save.
The loss for Indiana Wesleyan halts their five match win streak dating back to October 16. IWU is now 11-9-1 while Bethel improves to 14-7-0.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete in the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament to try and earn a spot in the NCCAA National Championship. No dates for the regional tournament have been released.
