Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team carried on with its winning ways Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over host Grace (Ind.) College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
The win is the third straight for the Wildcats and seventh in the last nine overall. IWU improves to 9-8-1 on the season and is over .500 for the first time in 2010.
Indiana Wesleyan completes Mid-Central College Conference play at 6-2-0. IWU will finish the season either second or third place in the conference depending on the Marian (Ind.) University vs. Bethel (Ind.) College contest later tonight.
Freshman midfielder Geoff Bowman started the scoring for Indiana Wesleyan in the 25th minute. But Grace rebounded quite quickly with the tying goal just 24 seconds later. The score remained 1-1 the rest of the first half.
The Wildcats quickly found the back of the net in the second minute of the second half for a 2-1 IWU lead. Senior midfielder Mitch Lobdell tallied the score with an assist from senior forward David Trainer.
For the second time in the match, Grace connected on the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Less than three minutes later Indiana Wesleyan would quickly counter with a goal of their own and regain the lead at 3-2. Junior defender Ross Tanzer connected on the game-winning goal in the 65th minute with the assist being credited to Trainer.
In the 79th minute, junior midfielder Josh McKinley added an insurance goal off a pass from junior forward Erik Johnson for the 4-2 advantage.
Indiana Wesleyan outshot Grace 17-6 in the first 45 minutes of play and 27-13 for the match. IWU doubled up on shots on goal 12-6. Indiana Wesleyan freshman goalkeeper Dylan McCauley collected four saves to earn the win in net.
The Wildcats next match will be on Saturday, October 30 in the MCC Tournament Quarterfinal. IWU will host an opening round match in the tournament against an opponent to be determined.
