Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- The offense awoke Tuesday evening as the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team defeated Marian (Ind.) University 5-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference opener for both teams.
After scoring just five goals in the first seven matches of the season, Indiana Wesleyan matched that total in the first conference match of the season to improve to 2-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the MCC. Marian drops to 1-7-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Wildcat sophomore forward Zach Grantham accounted for two of the goals tonight, both coming in the first half as IWU took a 3-0 advantage into intermission. Sophomore midfielder Ross Tanzer scored the other goal in the half as he beat the Marian keeper in the seventh minute for an early 1-0 lead.
Freshman striker Chase Miller and junior forward David Trainer added insurance goals in the second half to complete the scoring at 5-0.
Indiana Wesleyan goalkeepers Spenser Lang and Nick Platt combined for the shutout in net. Lang made a pair of saves in over 70 minutes of work.
The Wildcats dominated play as evidence of the score and by out-shooting the Knights 26-12. IWU put 16 shots on goal while Marian only earned three.
Indiana Wesleyan remains in MCC play as the Wildcats travel to play Huntington (Ind.) University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 26.
