Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Grace (Ind.) College on Saturday night the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team clinched third place in the Mid-Central College Conference.
Both teams entered play with identical 4-3-0 records in the MCC finale for both squads. The 1-0 victory moves the Wildcats into third place all by themselves. Grace evens their record in conference at 4-4-0 and ends the season tied for fourth place in the MCC.
In an evenly played match on IWU Senior Night, Indiana Wesleyan outshot Grace 8-7 and put three shots on goal to two for the Lancers. Both Lancer shots on goal came in the opening 45 minutes.
Grace was able to outshoot Indiana Wesleyan 6-4 in the first half. But the entertaining first half ended with no score.
Indiana Wesleyan took control of the match on both ends of the field in the second half. The IWU defense limited Grace to just one shot that missed wide.
The lone goal of the match came in the 50th minute of action. Sophomore midfielder Ross Tanzer took a free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the left side. His kick found its way in front of goal where junior defender Mark Demchak swiped the ball past the Grace goalkeeper. The tally was the first of the season for Demchak.
Grace never seriously threatened the rest of the way as IWU senior goalkeeper Spenser Lang collected a pair of saves for the shutout win.
Indiana Wesleyan completes the regular season with a 6-10-1 mark while Grace ends at 8-7-1.
The Wildcats will host a MCC Tournament First Round match on Saturday, October 31 at Wildcat Field. Time and opponent is to be determined. Check the Indiana Wesleyan athletic website for tournament schedule updates.
