Box Score MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team swept the Mid-Central College Conference weekly awards and took a national honor for their play this past weekend in Alabama.
Senior midfielder Christian Davis was honored as the MCC Defensive Player of the Week and senior forward Joel Trainer was tagged MCC Offensive Player of the Week. Later in the day, Trainer was awarded at the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week.
The honors follow a week in which the Wildcats went 2-0-0 during a trip to Alabama. IWU opened the weekend on Friday night with a 6-2 upset victory over No. 1-ranked Auburn (Ala.) University-Montgomery. The Wildcats capped the week on Saturday with a 2-1 win over University of Mobile (Ala.).
Trainer was instrumental in the wins on the offensive side of the ball as he racked up four goals and one assist in the two games. The forward accumulated a hat trick against No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery in addition to an assist. In the next game, Trainer found the back of the net to tie the score 1-1 in the 62nd minute of action.
Davis plays a defensive midfield for Indiana Wesleyan. His play was key for Indiana Wesleyan during the win over Auburn-Montgomery as IWU kept the top-ranked team off the scoreboard in the second half of play. Davis and the defense also were up to the challenge against Mobile, who is No. 27 in the polls. Mobile only scored once against Indiana Wesleyan, the night after scoring three goals in a 3-3 tie against No. 11-ranked Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University.
The Wildcats are now 3-5-0 on the season.
Indiana Wesleyan's next home match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, as the Wildcats host conference foe Huntington (Ind.) University.
