Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 4-ranked University of Rio Grande (Ohio) defeated the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Marion.
The Red Storm tallied a goal in each half to move their record to 6-0-0 on the season. The Wildcats fall to 1-5-0.
Rio Grande out-shot Indiana Wesleyan 16-7 in the competition, but the Wildcats equaled their counterpart as each team took three shots on goal. IWU junior goalkeeper Spenser Lang made one stop in net for the Wildcats.
The two teams each had scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes of action, but Rio Grande captured the lead on a crossing pass right in front of the net in the 25th minute of play. Rio Grande entered halftime with that 1-0 lead.
IWU continued to attack the Red Storm in the second half but were unable to find the net. But Rio Grande would score an insurance goal in the 59th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan continues to play strong competition as the Wildcats will play two opponents in Alabama next weekend. IWU battles No. 2-ranked Auburn (Ala.) University-Montgomery at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 19 and University of Mobile (Ala.) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20.
