Box Score MARION, Ind. (Box Score) -- Indiana Wesleyan University defeated Spring Arbor (Mich.) University 2-0 on Saturday night to win the NCCAA Men's Soccer Midwest Regional Championship at Wildcat Field.
The win secures an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Championships on December 3-6 in Kissimmee, Florida where Indiana Wesleyan finished fourth a year ago.
Indiana Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute off a tally from sophomore midfielder Mitch Lobdell.
The Wildcats controlled the first half of play as IWU out-shot Spring Arbor 6-1 in the opening period. The game entered halftime with a 1-0 Indiana Wesleyan advantage.
The second half featured a much more balanced match as Indiana Wesleyan out-shot Spring Arbor by just one shot, 7-6. But Indiana Wesleyan netted an important insurance goal in the 66th minute off the foot from sophomore midfielder Kyle Joern for the last goal of the night.
Indiana Wesleyan held a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 margin in shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Spenser Lang earned the shutout in net for Indiana Wesleyan. He stopped all four Cougar shot attempts.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 15-8-0 on the year while Spring Arbor falls to 10-7-2.
