Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- For the third year in a row the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team has at least captured a share of the Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship.
The Wildcats blanked host Grace (Ind.) College 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Winona Lake, Indiana to complete the conference regular season with a 7-1-0 mark. Bethel (Ind.) College is currently 6-1-0 in the MCC and battles Marian (Ind.) College later tonight. If Bethel wins, Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel will co-share the title. If Bethel ties or loses, Indiana Wesleyan is the outright champion.
"This was a good performance for our team to be co-champions of the MCC for the third year in a row," said IWU head coach Mark Castro. "This is one of our goals at the beginning of the year and is a step towards the (NAIA) national tournament."
Although Indiana Wesleyan put five goals on the scoreboard, the Wildcats struggled in the opening period. The match was a scoreless draw at halftime as Indiana Wesleyan was unable to put a shot on goal.
But Indiana Wesleyan came out firing in the second half and netted five goals via nine shots on goal.
Joel Trainer and Mason Bragg were able to bring the ball down the field to open the second half of play. Bragg then crossed the ball in front of the net to an awaiting Zach Grantham who knocked the ball in for the 1-0 IWU lead in the 46th minute.
Ten minutes later Indiana Wesleyan was able to score a second time as this time Bragg scored the goal off an assist from Kyle Joern. Nick Fortini combined with David Trainer for the third goal of the match in the 65th minute for a 3-0 advantage.
Joel Trainer then took on numerous Grace defenders before poking the ball to the back post for a score in the 73rd minute and Joern assisted Fortini on the final goal of the afternoon in the 75th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan out-shot the host Lancers 17-6 on the afternoon while Andy Rdzok and Michael Bratcher combined on the shutout in net for the Wildcats.
