Box Score Indianapolis, Ind. -- The NAIA sixth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men?s soccer team defeated Mid-Central College Conference foe Marian College 3-1 Tuesday night.
?Marian beat us last year 2-1 so we wanted to avenge that loss,? said IWU head coach Mark Castro of the win. ?From a result standpoint, I was happy even though it wasn?t a pretty game to watch. I think we were still fatigued, mentally and physically, from the weekend, but we got the win.?
The Wildcats (10-1-1, 3-0) netted the first three goals of the match before surrendering a score in the 80th minute.
Senior David Lopez-Cepero began the scoring with a forceful header that the Marian goalkeeper managed to get a hand on but could not keep from going into the net. The play began in the midfielder as Lopez-Cepero played a ball out wide left to freshman David Trainer. Trainer served the ball into the box where Lopez-Cepero ran onto it for the score.
Freshman Kyle Joern netted the second goal of the match near the conclusion of the first half. Junior Mason Bragg passed the ball to Joern on the left side of the pitch where Joern dribbled to his right foot near the end line before blasting a shot that left the Marian goalkeeper helpless.
Senior J.P. Bratcher assisted Joel Trainer for the third goal of the match in the 76th minute.
